LEAWOOD, Kan. — The Center for the History of Family Medicine (CHFM) announced today Jenna Georgiou, MD, a family physician in Rhode Island, is the recipient of the 2024 Sandra L. Panther Fellowship in the History of Family Medicine.

Dr. Georgiou was awarded the CHFM’s 14th Annual Fellowship in the History of Family Medicine for her project “Lessons in Family Medicine from the Ancient Greeks.” Her project involves researching the roots of primary care, specifically how ancient Greek medicine inspired modern family medicine in the U.S. and how the past can predict the future through the lens of Hippocratic medicine.

“Family Medicine is a unique specialty in that it respects the entire patient,” said Dr. Georgiou. “With this research project, I hope to draw in people who appreciate how the history of medicine informs the care our patients receive. My goal is to highlight the rich diversity of our specialty and the patients we serve, increasing awareness of the Center’s impressive collection.”

CHFM sponsors one $3,000 Fellowship in the History of Family Medicine each year. Named the Sandra L. Panther Fellowship in the History of Family Medicine in honor of former AAFP Foundation executive director, Sandra L. “Sandy” Panther, interested family physicians, residents, students, other health professionals, historians, scholars, educators, scientists, and others are invited to apply for the fellowship. For more information, please visit the Center's website.
